Notes:

Built as P-40E-1-CU Kittyhawk 1a for RAF order as ET730 (allocated USAAF serial 41-36084) but diverted to Australia. Brought on RAAF charge as A29-133 on 8 June 42. Saw combat with 75 Sqn at Milne Bay, named 'Polly'. In 1943 to 82 Sqn, Bankstown, then 1 Engineering School in 1944. Disposed of c.1947 & in 1961 remains purchased by Nelson Wilson for restoration to fly, 1961-1991. Reg VH-NRW reserved but ntu. Acquired by Australian War Memorial 1992.

A29-133 - Curtiss Kittyhawk 1A - Australia - Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF)

From the ADF Serials site; served with 75 Sqn and 82 Sqn; on 22/6/42 it was received by 75 Sqn from 2 AP serving with them at Milne Bay NG and was coded 'S' with "Polly" written on both sides of nose under exhaust stack pilot was P/O Bruce Edward Brown DFC* (402342); on 11/8/42 this was one of the 22 P-40s from 75 and 76 Sqns that engaged about 12 Zeros and P/O Brown was credited with one damaged Zero on that day; on 17/1/43 it was received back at 75 after time with 10 RSU; on 10/3/43 it was received back at 75 Sqn after having an engine change at 12 RSU and towards the end of that month went for repairs at 10 RSU; on 2/6/43 at 1430hrs 12 aircraft were scrambled and during take-off F/O Paul Ernest Whitehead (408942) noticed the starboard tyre began to deflate then shred swinging the plane to starboard so he accelerated and became airborne then the starboard leg collapsed; on 2/8/43 it was received back at 75 Sqn; on 11/9/43 it was received by 82 Sqn from 75 Sqn; on 17/10/43 it crash landed at Bankstown strip [pilot?] and was sent to 2 AD; from there it this a/c was allocated to 82 Sqn then 2 OTU then 1 ES and was eventually issued to the last on 7/6/44; it is now restored and on show in the Australian War Memorial with ground crew showing what conditions were like in PNG
