I stumbled upon this while on a weekend road trip from Napier to Tauranga. Built in 1976, this Mi-8 had an interesting history before arriving in New Zealand, having flown both Fidel Castro and Daniel Ortega in its life as a VIP transport helicopter. After that, it was sold to El Salvador for heavy lifting before ending up in New Zealand a little while later. After this helicopter's sister ship, YS-1005P, crashed, the type was grounded indefinitely in New Zealand. In 1994, it was towed from Taupo Airport to here, its final resting place. In all, this helicopter only flew some 1270 hours during the course of its life. Not a bad piece of aviation history just parked on the side of the road in rural New Zealand!
