Does this look like much of an international airport to you? Probably not - however it was closer to being one than you may think. Nuthampstead airfield (ex RAF Nuthampstead) was one of the airports considered in the 1960's to become the third London airport. Ultimately it was rejected in favour of Stansted airport, approx 10 miles East of here. All that's left now is a quiet farm strip (which quite obviously lies on the site of one of the old runways) where we are approaching to land, and the Barkway VOR which is visible on the extended centreline.
