Airborne 'Wing View' (past the aircraft window frame and vibration damper at centre) of the Markham River Valley and Nadzab Airfield below. We were flying between Lae Airfield and Mt Hagen Airport on 24Feb1975, aboard RAAF 38 Squadron Det A Caribou A4-264 (based at Port Moresby). In 1975 Nadzab was an Emergency Diversion Airfield, capable of taking international airliners. Passenger Jet operations were to move from Lae to Nadzab that year. The only building at Nadzab then was a timber hut by the apron and Runway (visible at far left of runway). Nadzab is now the principal Airport for the Lae region. This Valley was seized from the Japanese Army on 23Sep1943 by the Australian 7th Division and US Army Paratroops. WWII vintage taxiways and dispersal pads for USAAC Bombers (including Boeing B-17s) are visible at the top/left of the photo. (A4-264 later crashed at Camden NSW, on 04July1986.) Apologies for the quality of this 1975 photo. (Scanned Agfa CT21 slide.)
