The aircraft had just arrived from Mascot Sydney (YSSY / SYD), a flight which took 3.3 hours. This aircraft was previously operated by Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) as VH-TAA. (The aircraft had white livery with a PNG 'Bird of Paradise' adorning both sides of the fuselage.) From 1989, this aircraft was replaced by A310-324 Cn 549, also Registered P2-ANG.
