The MiG-17 (NATO code: Fresco) was a fighter aircraft produced in the early 1950s by the Soviet Union. Designed as a successor to the MiG-15, the aircraft was more controllable at higher Mach speeds and played a crucial role in the Vietnam war and surprised the USAF where subsonic MiG-17s downed sophisticated Mach-2-class F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bombers over North Vietnam. Over 11000 of them were built and some are still in active service with three countries.
