The onset of the deliberately set Colby fire, early morning on January 16, 2014, just east of LAX. Note the "grass concrete" in the foreground which leads the view to the distance showing rising smoke, with runways 24L and 24R to the left of the frame. Within an hour of taking this photo, the sky over half the airport was covered by this soot, which turned the sun to the color of a basketball. Amazingly, aircraft movements were not at all disrupted by this forest fire, despite its apparent proximity to the airfield (1200x800 pixels).
