Purpose of the tail wheel on the IL-62 is to prevent it from tilting especially during loading and unloading. The IL-62 has a critical CG in a very limited range. The retractable tail wheel goes up once the plane is taxing and retracted during flight. Additionally, the VC-10 has a similar design.
