This was one of two prototypes built in the mid 1970s to compete for a bid to replace the C-130. The Air Force didn't buy it, but the basic design is what eventually became the C-17 Globemaster. Both of these were retired from testing in April 1980; the other one is on display at the nearby Pima Air Museum.
