Departing TNCM right after liftoff you see a large inlet. This is where all of the boats take refuge when a hurricane is heading toward the island, that is, those that haven't high-tailed it to some other island out of harm's way.

That "inlet" is known as the Simpsonbay Lagoon. Since hurricane Luis (September 1995) not known anymore as a safe refuge. Best defense ... Don't be there .... when the hurricane is heading that way !
