I wondered what the two doors underneath the aircraft were and why they were still open at take off.I was informed by a US Airways A330 captain that they are intakes for the air conditioning that open automatically on the ground for more air.

Yes. And the entire air for cooling down the computers on board the A330s and-340s is also blown out through these openings. I once watched some guys drying their hair in rainy weather with this warm air. :-)
