I have just finished reading the book that was published on this incident. It REALLY is an amazing story! The book is entitled 'Freefall' by William and Marilyn Hoffer. I was a passenger on that flight. The nose gear didn't collapse - it just never got down. The drag racing was taking place on the runway used for this landing. Actually, it really was not a runway. It used to be but had been converted for the racing. You can see one of the guard rails in the picture. A guard rail down the centre was being pushed over by the nose of the aircraft as it slid along the ground. There is another runway which is used for aircraft purposes. After I exited the plane down the front chute seen in the picture I saw the Captain and others putting out the fire in the nose using fire extinguishers, some of which were provided by the drag racers. The Gimli fire truck arrived after the fire had been extinguished. November 27, 2006

There apparently was a small fire in the nose after landing, but some of the people running the races quickly came over with fire extinguishers. And as the previous commenter mentioned, yeah, they ran out of fuel long before the landing. ;) September 25, 2006
