Remarks: This picture was taken hours after the landing of the "Gimli Glider". After a hard landing and hitting the guard rail, the nose gear collapsed. This runway is an inactive runway. At the time of the landing, there was a go-cart race going on. They quickly cleared the runway when the B767 was on final approach! Photo by Grant Sesak.

Certainly didn't have to worry about a fire!! Anybody know why??

Posted by Carlos Fuentespina on August 5, 2006

It's a possibility that no fuel was present in this crash.:)

There apparently was a small fire in the nose after landing, but some of the people running the races quickly came over with fire extinguishers. And as the previous commenter mentioned, yeah, they ran out of fuel long before the landing. ;)

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider, the race was going on on a parallel strip, not the strip the 767 actually used.

I was a passenger on that flight. The nose gear didn't collapse - it just never got down. The drag racing was taking place on the runway used for this landing. Actually, it really was not a runway. It used to be but had been converted for the racing. You can see one of the guard rails in the picture. A guard rail down the centre was being pushed over by the nose of the aircraft as it slid along the ground. There is another runway which is used for aircraft purposes. After I exited the plane down the front chute seen in the picture I saw the Captain and others putting out the fire in the nose using fire extinguishers, some of which were provided by the drag racers. The Gimli fire truck arrived after the fire had been extinguished.

Good grief! Nigel, what was the reaction by the passengers when the engines went silent?? (I imagine there was a collective "that ain't good" going around the cabin...)

I have just finished reading the book that was published on this incident. It REALLY is an amazing story! The book is entitled 'Freefall' by William and Marilyn Hoffer. According to the bookm, many passengers and crew performed many acts of selflessness including Nigel Field who has posted the comment above.

I have eaten dinner with Captain Robert Pearson...I guess you can say that I was his step-grandson.

There was a great photo published, I think in Life Magazine, from the runway as the aircraft approached. There are still people in lawn chairs watching the drag races. Anyone know how I could find it??

It might be on Google. Great photo!!
