Remarks: Normally the Red Arrows perform passing manoeuvres such as this with the belly of the aircraft towards the crowd. I was on the far side of the display line for this show, which had 3 benefits - avoiding the crowds, having the light in the right direction, and seeing the formation 'canopy on'. This photo also shows well how Reds 6 and 7, behind the front 5, sit below those aircraft, so avoiding their jet efflux, which would impact on flying stability. This formation is called 'Phoenix'.
