Remarks: Ever wondered why the F4U had bent wings? The propeller was so large that had it had a straight wing it would have needed a long reach undercarriage. Not a good thing to have for carrier landings. Bending the wings shortened the undercarriage so a strong undercarriage could be fitted. Scanned from a K64 slide
Remarks: One gets a feeling of looking at a very angry engine. Bob Guilford raced The Blue Max in the qualifying rounds at a speed of 325.994mph, and raced in the Unlimited Bronze race at 264.586 finishing 8th. The aircraft was Bu Aer 133693, it crashed killing the pilot and her passenger at Brown Field, San Diego, 10May87. Scanned from a K64 slide
Remarks: Very nice collection of military hardware at the USS Alabama Memorial in Mobile. This Corsair is marked as BuNo 129359. It is my understanding that this fine collection was heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina just days after this photo was taken.
