Shades of Peenemunde 1944! The moment of launch of a Replica WWII German Vergeltungswaffe 1 V-1 Flying Bomb (Fieseler Fi 103 / FZG-76) from its ‘ski ramp’, taken on Sunday 05Apr2015 at the Classic Fighters Omaka Airshow, held near Blenhein NZ over Easter 2015. The original V-1 pilot-less aircraft carried 850 kg of high explosives, when launched against targets in England late in WWII. The original aircraft was powered by a petrol fuelled pulse-jet engine, which had a distinctive sound. (Hence the Nick-name ‘Buzz Bomb’). This replica was powered by five almost silent electrically operated ducted fans, enabling the ‘Doodle-bug’ to do an orbit of the airfield under radio control. This is something I never expected to see or photograph. Congratulations to the Engineering team and RC Pilot responsible for this re-enactment.
