The first 'modern' airliner was built specifically for United Airlines who had an embargo on the first 60 units. The embargo proved to be the aircraft's downfall when Transcontinental and Western Air (later to become Trans World Airlines) asked United to allow them to purchase 247s after the 20th was delivered. The United board duly refused to renege on their agreement with Boeing so TWA sent out for bids to build a new aircraft. Douglas won the contract with the larger and faster DC-1 and, by the time the production DC-2 (see 6648227 ... Click Here) and further refined DC-3 saw operation with airlines, the 247 was simply too small and slow against its competitor. Production stopped after just 75 units.
