The only way to get in and out of this aircraft is via the leading edge (as you may see the black step is indeed visible in your picture...! The pilot was doing nothing wrong. Its the same way the pilot got in after swinging the prop! The aircraft had no brakes and only a tailskid. It was not uncommon particularly with a tailwind as visible from the windsock to be unable able to turn the aircraft into wind to take off. without the aid of a wing runner it was often necessary to get out and turn the aircraft around. There are hand holes in the wingtips if a wing runner is available. If there was a large area to turn around in then with full power and full rudder it was often but not always possible to swing round in a big sweep.
