Mike DAngiolillo comments (23 December 2017): I was a sheet metal worker/mechanic at the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF) located at Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA. It was the designated depot level maintenance facility for the Tomcat. In late 1977 159619 was landing at NAS Fallon, NV when it skidded off the runway which collapsed the right hand main gear which tore into the right hand aft section of the engine nacelle causing extensive structural damage. 159619 became known as the Fallon Skidder.,From Circa January 1978 to Circa June 1979 Repaired. It was brought to NARF Norfolk in early 1978 to be repaired in hangar V-88. Myself and several others were assigned to rebuild the aircraft and put it back in service which took approximately 18 months. Converted to a F-14D(R). When the F-14D(R) program was established, 159619 was one of 37 total aircraft chosen to be upgraded to the D variant. NARF Norfolk performed the remanufacture effort on 4 Tomcats with the balance being done by Grumman Aerospace Corp.
