Preserved at Italian Air Force museum of Vigna di Valle. Certainly one of the best known fighter planes of all time, the Spitfire formed the backbone of the British air force during the Second World War. Distinguished especially in the Battle of Britain, it was developed, from 1936 to 1947, in many versions. Good handling, high speed and heavy armament made this aircraft one of the most effective fighters of the time. In Italy it was the first Allied production aircraft to come into line with the co-belligerent forces starting from 1944 in the V and VB versions, on which the 20th Group of the 51st Wing operated. In 1946 other copies of version IX were sold to the A.M. who equipped the 5th and 51st Stormo. The aircraft on display is a Spitfire initially included in the Polish Group that fought in the R.A.F. and who participated in the Normandy landings. Later, sent to the Italian front, it was sold to the A.M. who used it until 1950.
